His view is that you should draw your characters from the family that surrounds you or ‘borrow/steal’ from existing characters in fiction. Personally, I wouldn’t draw on characters from my family as I am sure they would realise, and I don’t want to fall out with my balding brother and his smelly feet. However, I will draw on people I have known and sometimes people I know. On most occasions, I take different personality traits from a selection of people rather than 'copy' one person onto paper.
The author Kurt Vonnegut once said that “every character should want something.” This is important as it gives your character their own story arc.
When I create characters, I consider the above as it offers good guidelines within which to plan.
