Before I write my novels, I create my characters. As the story evolves my characters evolve with it.
Let’s create our own character. Above is a public domain photograph taken by Anne Lowe. Take a look at it and write some notes about this character. As I wrote last week - think about his character, personality, background, profession, appearance, interests and anything else you can write about.
Pick one of the attributes you have written about (e.g. personality) and turn your notes into a detailed paragraph. Now rewrite this paragraph. Can you write the description again to influence the reader to like or dislike your character? What is your character’s story? To rehash something Kurt Vonnegut said, what does your character want? I hope you have now created your own character and influenced the reader to like to dislike them.
When I am writing and introducing new characters, this is what I do.
