Let's face it. There are things that we have to do in life that we don't necessarily want to do and redrafting is one of mine. So, how do I solve this problem? Simple, I use the carrot and the stick approach. The carrot is my reward for redrafting, the stick is my punishment for not redrafting.
I have set myself the goal of redrafting five chapters each week. If I do this then I will eat a small packet of licorice allsorts (these are sweets or candies). This is not going to break the bank but I will enjoy them, even if my dentist will tell me off. The sugar will also raise my serotonin levels, rush to my brain and make me happy. I will be happy because I have reached my target and I will get a sugar high.
My stick is that I know I will feel grumpy if I have not redrafted five chapters by the end of each Friday. I will feel grumpy because I have missed my goal and even grumpier because I don't get any sweets.
This is all very simple but, at least for me, very effective. I should have the redraft finished within six weeks and I will be visiting the dentist the week after!
